An embalmer is a person whose job is to treat a dead body with special chemicals, oils, and other liquids so the body does not go bad quickly. Families often need a few extra days to fly home, sit with the person, or hold a funeral, and this work buys that time. The job is skilled and quiet. It usually sits inside a funeral home, not a hospital. People do not use the word about the living, and they often say it carefully, or talk around it with softer phrases like “prepare the body.” It is a job title. The verb is : that is the treating. An embalmer is the one who does it.
