Emancipation is the act of giving people legal or political rights they did not have, or the state of having those rights at last. In the United States, school history ties the word tightly to the ending of slavery — Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation is the example almost everyone meets. In Britain in the nineteenth century, Catholic emancipation meant easing laws that had kept Catholics out of full public life. So the word is wider than slavery, even if that is the first story in many textbooks. It is a formal historical and political noun, not a word for finishing a or leaving a noisy room. Though actually, opinion writers sometimes stretch it to freedom from an old idea, but news and teaching still mostly keep it for real legal change.
