Elongated means longer than you would expect, as if something rounder or shorter has been pulled. An elongated face, an elongated oval, an elongated shadow. It often carries a picture of stretching, not just of being long to start with — a snake is long; a balloon someone has pulled is elongated. It is a calm, slightly formal describing word, common in science, design, and art writing. Used about a person’s body it can sound clinical; used about a shape it is neutral.
