Electrosmog is a name some people give to the unseen waves that come off phones, Wi-Fi, computers, power lines, and other electric machines. Ordinary smog is dirty city air; here the word is a picture, as if those waves were a kind of invisible dirt around us. Some people believe this electrosmog makes them ill — headaches, poor sleep, a dragged-out feeling. Most official health bodies say ordinary home machines have not been shown to do that, but the worry is real for the people who feel it. You will meet the word in newspapers, campaigns, and worried everyday talk, not in careful science papers. It is fairly new, informal, and a little dramatic. For school science, “waves from phones” or “electromagnetic radiation” is the plainer phrase. Though actually, the word itself already takes a side: if you say electrosmog, you are usually treating those waves as pollution.
