Egypt is a country in northeast Africa, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, with the Nile running through the middle of its settled land. The capital is Cairo. Many learners meet Egypt first as ancient Egypt: pharaohs, the Pyramids, graves under the ground for important people, a writing system of pictures, and a rich old religion. That civilisation was real, and people still study it. Though actually, Egypt is also a living country of well over a hundred million people, with modern cities, farms along the Nile, and Arabic as the main language. Older schoolbook population figures are already too small. The English name came, through Greek and Latin, from an Egyptian name for the temple city of the god Ptah at Memphis: the house of the ka of Ptah. Students who only learn pyramids miss the country that is there now.
