Egress is the act of leaving a building or place, or the right to leave it. Fire officers, architects, and lawyers use it: emergency egress, a means of egress, a right of egress across someone else's land so you can reach the road. On a door, ordinary English says exit or way out; egress sounds like a safety notice or a contract. It can also be a verb, to egress, meaning to go out, but that use is even more technical. When people stay in this formal register, the pair word for going in is ingress. You will almost never hear a friend say it is time to egress at a party.
