If someone is egotistical, they like to talk about how great and important they think they are. This is the everyday adjective. You will hear it about famous people, colleagues, and characters in stories. It is negative, but it is ordinary English, not a specialist word. It can describe a person or a moment: an egotistical answer, an egotistical post. People sometimes say it with a small smile about themselves ('This sounds egotistical, but…') when they know they are about to praise their own work. That hedge does not make the word kind; it just shows the speaker knows how it lands. is the cousin without the extra t, and it leans toward cold self-interest. Egotistical is the one that belongs with talking yourself up. English piled -al onto , and the longer form became the one people actually say.
