An egotist is someone who likes to talk about how great and important they think they are. The light is always on them. Calling someone an egotist is a criticism. The word is a little more than just saying they are full of themselves, but the meaning is ordinary. Though actually, people mix egotist and egoist all the time. In the stricter sense, an egoist puts their own interest first; an egotist cannot stop talking about how wonderful they are. One can be quiet and still . An egotist is rarely quiet. You will meet both used as insults for a self-centred person, so listen for whether the complaint is 'they only care about themselves' or 'they never stop talking about themselves.'
