Egoistic describes a person or an action that puts the self first. Other people’s needs come later, or not at all. Dictionaries often file this with egotism: thinking you are better or more important than the people around you. Calling someone egoistic is a hard judgement, not a compliment, but the word itself is more a book-and-essay word than a playground insult. Though actually, careful writers keep two nearby ideas apart. Egoism is the bigger claim that people act for themselves, or even that this is a fair way to live. Egotism is smaller and ruder: talking yourself up, and acting as if you are the star of every room. Egoistic sits closer to the first; egotistic and egotistical sit closer to the second. In everyday talk almost nobody keeps this tidy, and you will hear all of them used as if they meant the same thing. If you need one word you will actually meet, it is egotistical.
