An egoist is a person who puts themselves first. In everyday English, people use it much as they use : someone who thinks about their own wants and does not have much room for anyone else's. Said that way, it sounds like a complaint. In philosophy, an egoist is someone who holds egoism as a belief — that acting for yourself is natural or right — which is a cooler, more technical use, not always a comment on manners. The two uses sit side by side, and speakers often do not keep them apart. If someone says “Don't be such an egoist,” they mean the everyday thing: you are taking too much and seeing too little of other people.
