A large vegetable with smooth, shiny skin. The kind you see most often is deep purple, long or fat, and pale inside with tiny seeds; when you cook it, the flesh goes soft. In American English this is eggplant; in British English the usual word is . On a table the same vegetable is 茄子 — that is the word you already know. The English name is egg + plant because the first plants English speakers named this way had small white fruit that really did look like eggs. The purple ones we eat now kept the name. It is a plant you eat, not a plant that grows eggs.

組成egg + plant, first used only for the white, egg-shaped kind. Dutch and Afrikaans eierplant, German Eierpflanze, and Swedish äggplanta are built the same way.
