Efflorescence is a rather grand word for a : the act of something coming out into its best shape, or the stretch of time when that happens. Writers use it for art, cities, ideas, even a mood: the efflorescence of painting in one century; a brief efflorescence of hope after the news. The picture underneath is a flower opening. It is a , formal word. In everyday talk people say a golden age, a boom, or “that was when it really took off.” Though actually, science and building work use the same word in a drier way. On old brick or concrete you sometimes see a white dusty coat. Water moves through the wall, carrying salt; when it dries, the salt is left on the surface. That white coat is also called efflorescence. Doctors once used it for a rash that “flowers” on the skin. Same picture — something coming out onto the surface — in three rooms: art, walls, and skin. The “best period” sense is the one essays want; the salt sense turns up in chemistry and on building sites.
