1. 1

An educationalist is someone who knows a lot about ways of teaching and learning — how schools should work, how children pick things up, what a good lesson looks like. They may write books, advise a government, or train teachers. They are not simply 'a teacher,' though some educationalists used to teach. The word is more common in British English; American English often prefers educationist, which means the same thing. It is a formal, professional word. You will hear it in newspapers when they quote an expert on schools, not in the playground. Though actually, the job is about ideas and systems as much as about standing in a classroom.
