1. 1

Edgeways means sideways — with the thin side first, or moving toward the side. If you push a book onto a shelf edgeways, you slide it in on its edge, not laid flat. If a table will not go through a door, you turn it edgeways. The word feels a little British or old-fashioned; many people, especially in American English, say edgewise instead, with the same meaning. Though actually, the meaning you will meet most is not furniture at all. It lives in the set phrase “I couldn’t get a word in edgeways”: everyone else was talking so much that you had no space to speak. That idiom is informal and very common; using edgeways about objects is rarer.
