Ecumenical is a church word. It describes the hope that the different branches of the Christian religion — Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and others — can talk, work, and even pray in a more united way, instead of staying in separate camps. It does not mean they all become one church tomorrow; it means they look for what they share and try to walk closer. You will hear it in phrases like “an ecumenical service” or “the ecumenical movement.” It is formal, and you mostly meet it in church life, not in street chat about ordinary friendship. Though actually, some writers stretch it to mean “bringing different groups together” outside religion, but the home of the word is still Christian unity.
組成From ecumenic + -al. By the look of the word, ecumene + -ical. The older Greek piece meant “the inhabited world” — the whole world people live in — so the idea is “of the whole church / worldwide.”
