A country on the north-west coast of South America, with Colombia to the north, Peru to the south and east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It has about 18 million people; the capital is , high up in the mountains, and the largest city is Guayaquil on the coast. The land changes completely as you cross it: hot flat coast, then the high with snow and volcanoes, then rain forest going east into the Amazon. The Galápagos Islands, where Darwin studied the animals, belong to Ecuador too, about 1,000 km out in the ocean. The name means 'equator' in Spanish, because the line runs right through the country. Spanish is the main language, with Quichua widely spoken as well, and the country uses the US dollar as its money. The adjective and the word for a person from there is .
組成Taken from Spanish Ecuador, which is simply the Spanish word for 'the equator'. Behind that is Latin aequator, 'one that makes equal', from aequus, 'equal' — the equator is the line that divides the earth into two equal halves.
