A person with a naturally thin, narrow body — long arms and legs, small bones, little fat, and a hard time putting on weight or muscle no matter how much they eat. The word comes from an old system that sorted every human body into three types: ectomorph (thin), mesomorph (broad and muscular) and endomorph (round, softer, gains weight easily). You should know that psychologists have largely dropped that system — the man who invented it also claimed each body type came with a personality, which turned out to be wrong, and most real people are a mixture anyway. The word survives today mostly in gyms, bodybuilding magazines and fitness videos, where people use it as a rough label for 'the skinny guy who struggles to bulk up'. Countable: an ectomorph. There is also the adjective ectomorphic.

組成ecto- + -morph. 'ecto-' is Greek for 'outside' or 'outer'; '-morph' is Greek morphe, 'shape, form'. It was named from 'ectoderm', the outer layer of cells in a growing embryo, because the man who made the system thought thin people developed most from that layer.
