1. 1

Ecoterrorism, in the sense filed here, is when someone uses fear, sabotage or force to try to stop companies or groups they believe are hurting the environment — burning machines, wrecking labs, spiking trees so they cannot be cut, and so on. Eco- points at the living world; terrorism is using terror to push a political goal. Put together, the word names those tactics as a kind of terror. Though actually, this is a fighting word, not a calm school-book word. Police, governments and companies often use it, because it turns the action into a crime with the heaviest name available. Many activists say the label is unfair: they say they hit property, not people, and that the real violence is the damage to the land. There is another, less common use — destroying nature itself as a weapon, such as poisoning a river — but that is not this meaning. The word is formal, heavy, and almost always used by one side about the other.
