Ecclesiastical means “to do with the Christian church as an organisation” — its priests, its rules, its buildings, its courts, its calendar, its music. An ecclesiastical court is a church court, not a state court. Ecclesiastical history is the story of the church. The word is formal. It does not just mean “religious” in a vague way: a quiet prayer at home is religious, but it is not ecclesiastical. This word points at the church’s official world — holy orders, church law, church architecture — rather than at private faith.
