An ecclesiastic is a person whose work is the Christian church — a priest, a minister, a bishop, someone set apart to lead worship and church life. It is a bookish, rather old-fashioned word. In ordinary talk people say priest, pastor, minister, or “people who work for the church.” You meet ecclesiastic in history writing, careful news about the church as an organisation, and older prose. It is wider than priest: it can cover Catholic priests and Protestant ministers alike, so it names the role, not one denomination. It almost always means a Christian official, not a Buddhist monk or a temple priest. Writers once used it as an adjective too (“an ecclesiastic career”), but today ecclesiastical is the usual adjective, and ecclesiastic as a noun is the person.
