Eastward means towards the east. You can walk eastward, look eastward, or take an eastward road. As an adjective, it describes a thing that points or moves that way: an eastward wind, an eastward journey. As an adverb, it tells you the direction of the action: they travelled eastward. American English likes eastward for both jobs. It has the same idea as east, with a little extra “in that direction” feel — a bit more like careful speech or writing than the short word east, which is what most people say. Though actually, on signs and in stations you will more often see for traffic. Eastward tells you the way; it does not tell you that something is the east, and it does not name a person from the east.
