Earnestness is the noun: the quality of being very serious and sincere. You feel someone’s earnestness when they care a lot and are not playing. It is a fairly formal word; books and teachers like it. In everyday talk, people might just say how serious or sincere someone is. Same family as earnest and earnestly — and still nothing to do with ears.
