If you do something earnestly, you mean it. You are serious and sincere, not joking and not putting on a show. Someone who asks earnestly really wants the answer; someone who hopes earnestly really cares what happens. The word is a little formal. In easy talk people often say seriously or really. It has nothing to do with ears. Though actually, it sounds like the man’s name Ernest, which many mix up with this word.
