EAP stands for English for Academic Purposes. It is English for people whose first language is not English, and who need it to study at a college or university: to follow lectures, read papers, write essays, and speak in class. It is not the English of shopping or chatting, and it is not only exam practice, though a test like may sit beside it. Language centres and universities print EAP on the course list; teachers use the letters all the time, though students often just say “academic English”. Though actually, EAP sits next to other labels in the same trade: general English is everyday talk, and ESP is English for one job, such as nursing or business. EAP is the campus kind — a fairly formal, prospectus word, not something you say at dinner.
