You write e.g. when you want to give one or two samples, not a complete list. It means “for example.” A teacher might write “citrus fruits, e.g. oranges and lemons”: those two are samples, not every citrus fruit there is.
You write e.g.你寫 e.g.,when you want to give是在你想給 one or two samples一兩個樣本、not a complete list而不是完整清單的時候。It means它的意思是 “for example.”「例如」。A teacher might write老師可能會寫 “citrus fruits, e.g. oranges and lemons”「柑橘類水果,例如柳橙和檸檬」:those two are samples那兩個是樣本,not every citrus fruit there is不是世上全部的柑橘類。
It comes from Latin exemplī grātiā, “for the sake of an example.” English first wrote that as ex. gr., then it again to e.g.
It comes from Latin它來自拉丁文 exemplī grātiā,“for the sake of an example.”「為了舉個例子」。English first wrote that as英語一開始把它寫成 ex. gr.,then shortened it again後來又再縮短 to e.g.成 e.g.。
You see it in textbooks, notices, and careful writing; people often put a after it. When we speak, we nearly always say “for example” instead of reading the letters out — saying “ee-jee” aloud sounds a bit stiff, though you will hear it in lectures.
You see it你會看到它 in textbooks, notices, and careful writing在課本、公告和講究的文字裡;people often人們常 after it在它後面 put a comma加一個逗號。When we speak說話的時候,we nearly always我們幾乎都 instead of reading the letters out不把字母唸出來,say “for example”而是說 “for example”——saying “ee-jee” aloud把「ee-jee」唸出聲,sounds a bit stiff聽起來有點僵硬,though不過 in lectures在講課裡,you will hear it你還是會聽到。
Though actually, there is also a thin noun use built from the abbreviation (“an e.g.” meaning an example), but almost never need that. What they do need: e.g. is not i.e. (which means “that is / I mean this, ”), and it is not etc. (which means “and the rest of the list”).
Though actually不過其實,there is also還有,built from the abbreviation從這個縮寫長出來的,a thin noun use一個很邊緣的名詞用法(“an e.g.” meaning an example意思是「一個例子」),but learners但學習的人 almost never need that幾乎用不到。What they do need真正需要的是這個:e.g. is not i.e. e.g. 不是 i.e.。(which means i.e. 的意思是 “that is / I mean this, restated”「也就是說/我是指,換個說法」),and it is not etc.它也不是 etc.。(which means etc. 的意思是 “and the rest of the list”「以及清單剩下的那些」)。
組成A shorter form of the older abbreviation ex. gr. Both stand for Latin exemplī grātiā, “for the sake of an example.”
