An e-cigarette is a small piece of electronic equipment, often the same shape as a cigarette, that heats a liquid and makes a mist the user can breathe in. The liquid usually contains nicotine, the same chemical as in tobacco, but nothing is burning. That is why people also say vape, and why the cloud is not quite smoke. Early ones copied a cigarette on purpose so the move felt familiar; later ones look like pens or USB sticks, and in loose talk those are vapes too. The word is ordinary in news and health talk, a bit shop-technical beside the looser word vape. Though actually, “electronic” does not mean “only water flavour.” Many of these still deliver nicotine, and they can become a habit even when they smell like fruit.
