E'en is a written of even, used in old poems and songs, not in shops or chats today. Here even is the even that means “this far, surprisingly, still”: e'en a child could see it; e'en now the bells are ringing. Poets dropped a sound so the line would fit the beat, the same old trick as e'er from ever. If you say it as everyday English, it will sound like acting in a play — which is exactly when it belongs. People read it like “een,” to rhyme with seen. Though actually, some old poems also write e'en for evening (good e'en). That is a different even, the end-of-day one.
