A dystopia is an imagined place, usually in a story, where life has gone badly wrong — cruel rulers, little freedom, or a broken world. It is the dark twin of utopia, a perfect-sounding place. Writers use it as a warning: if we keep going this way, look. Books and films have made the word famous, so people now stretch it: a grim office, a grey housing block, even a miserable group chat may be called “dystopian.” That stretch is common, though actually the core sense is still a whole society imagined as a warning, not just “somewhere I dislike.” You will meet it in reviews, , and school essays about the future. It is a serious, slightly word, not playground talk. The adjective dystopian is even more common than the noun.
組成From dys- + -topia, as if from Ancient Greek dus- (“bad”) + topos (“place”) + -ia. It was built that way because utopia was reread as eu-topia, “good place.”
