Dysentery is a serious illness of the bowels. A person with it passes waste far more often than usual, often with blood, and feels very ill. It spreads through dirty water or food where sanitation is poor, and it can be dangerous if the body loses too much water. It is a medical word. In everyday talk people more often say “a bad stomach bug” for milder illness; dysentery names a specific, severe bowel disease. Though actually, people sometimes stretch it as a dramatic word for any awful stomach upset — that is loose talk, not the careful meaning.
