Dunkirk is a port and industrial city in northern France, on the sea near Belgium. Its French name is Dunkerque. In English, people say Dunkirk most of all because of 1940, in the Second World War. The German army had pushed British and many French soldiers to the sea there. It looked as if the whole army would be caught. Instead, navy ships and a crowd of small civilian boats — fishing boats, pleasure boats — crossed the Channel and brought hundreds of thousands of men back to England. The British still talk about “the spirit of Dunkirk”: helping, staying calm, and refusing to give up when things look finished. Though actually, the memory is tidier than the day was: it was a retreat, not a victory, and many soldiers did not get away. The name is always capitalised, and in history class it is as much an event as a city.
組成From Dutch Duinkerke: duin, “dune” (a hill of sand) + kerk, “church.” By the look of the English word, dune + kirk (kirk is a Scots and northern word for church).
