Dunblane is a small town in central Scotland, a quiet place with an old cathedral. Many people outside Scotland, though, hear the name and think first of March 1996. A man called Thomas Hamilton walked into a primary school there and shot sixteen young children and their teacher, then killed himself. The children were only five and six. The whole country felt it. People asked, very loudly, why a man like that could have guns, and in 1997 Britain passed much stricter gun laws. That is why a learner's book still files the town: not because it is large, but because the name became a turning point. The town itself is still there, and people live ordinary lives in it; the name carries both the place and the wound.
