A Dumpster is a large metal box for rubbish, the kind you see behind shops, apartment buildings, and building sites in the United States. It is open at the top, or has lids, and a special truck lifts it and empties it. People throw in bags, broken furniture, and building waste. The word started as a brand (Dempster, blended with dump) and then became the ordinary American name, the way some people say 普拿疼 for a pain tablet. You will often see it with a small d now, dumpster, because many speakers no longer feel it as a company name. British English usually says skip for a similar big container; in Taiwan the close everyday word is 垃圾斗, not a borrowed Dumpster. Though actually it is not a small indoor bin, and it is not the truck. People also talk about dumpster diving — searching in one for food or usable things — which tells you how ordinary and slightly grim the object is. Informal, American, very physical.
