Duckweed is a tiny green plant that floats on still water — ponds, ditches, the quiet corners of lakes — and can cover the surface like a carpet. Each plant is almost too small to notice; together they look like green dust or a green skin on the water. Ducks and other water birds eat it, which is probably how it got the name. In science there are several small plants in this group, but in ordinary English duckweed is the lot of them. It is a nature-study word, not a kitchen word.
