1. 1

DTP is the work of arranging writing and pictures on a computer so a magazine, a small book, a flyer, or a school yearbook is ready to print. You choose the size of the letters, the columns, the photos, and where each block of text sits. Special software does this job. Before DTP, you needed a print shop and physical type; the “desktop” in the name meant you could do it at a desk, on a personal computer. The term was everywhere in the 1980s and 1990s. Designers and print shops still use it, though actually a lot of younger people just say “layout” or name the program. It is a workplace word, not slang, and it is about the page you will print — not about posting on social media.
