A dromedary is a camel with one hump on its back. This is the camel of hot in North Africa and the Middle East — the one most people picture when they hear camel. The camel with two humps is a different animal, the Bactrian camel, from colder parts of Asia. Though actually, in everyday talk people often just say camel for both, and that is fine until you need to tell the two kinds apart. Dromedary is the more precise, slightly school-book word. The name comes from a Greek word for running: this was the fast camel, the one used for long travel.
