A drive-through is a restaurant, bank, pharmacy, or similar place where you get served without getting out of your car. You follow a lane, talk into a speaker, pay at a window, and someone hands you the bag or the papers; then you drive away. People also use it as an adjective: a drive-through restaurant, a drive-through window. On American signs you will often see the shorter spelling drive-thru; drive-through is the fuller form. Though actually, this is not the same as a drive-in. At a drive-in you park and stay in the car — to eat, or to watch a film. At a drive-through you keep moving. The word is everyday in places where car life is strong; the idea exists in British English too, but it is less of a habit in some cities.
