A drive-by is when someone in a moving car shoots at a person, a house, or another car, and then the car is gone. News English often says drive-by shooting; drive-by by itself can name that event. It is a hard crime-news word, not a joke and not a driving lesson. You fire as you go past. Though actually, people sometimes stretch it: a drive-by comment is a quick hit, as if the speaker never even stopped. That use borrows the picture of the car that does not stay. The home meaning, and the one this entry is for, is the shooting.
