Drainage is the way water or dirty liquid flows away, or the system of , ditches and drains that does that job. After heavy rain, good drainage means the water can leave a field, a road or a house instead of sitting there. Doctors also talk about drainage when fluid is allowed to leave a wound. The word is a little more formal and more “whole-system” than drain: drain is often the hole, the pipe, or the verb to let the water out; drainage is the process or the setup. You hear it in housing, farming, city work and medicine. It is a practical word — not slang, not fancy.
