Dracula is the vampire in Bram Stoker’s 1897 book Dracula, and then in a huge number of films, plays, and Halloween costumes after that. Count Dracula lives in a castle in Transylvania, wears a long black cape that hangs from the shoulders, and has two long sharp teeth. He drinks people’s blood to stay alive, often by biting the neck, and in the usual story he cannot bear sunlight. When English speakers say someone looks like Dracula, they mean the cape, the hair, the pale face, or a costume — not a real lord. People also use Dracula loosely for any vampire; the famous one is this count. Though actually, the name was borrowed from a real prince, Vlad III, called Dracula. His father Vlad II was Dracul, a name from the Order of the Dragon; in Romanian Dracul is literally “the Devil,” from drac, “devil,” which comes from Latin dracō, “dragon.” The book is a story. The nickname is older.
