A doyenne is the oldest, most respected, or most experienced woman in a group — the female match of doyen. You meet it in writing about the arts, fashion, food, science, and public life: the doyenne of a newspaper, of a dance world, of a research lab. Like doyen, it is French in English, so it sounds formal and rather than everyday. Though actually, English is a bit messy here: some people still keep doyenne for women and doyen for men; others use doyen for everyone and let doyenne feel old-fashioned. Either way, it is about being the senior woman of that circle, not about being someone's wife or assistant.
