When a company or other organisation , it cuts the number of people who work there, usually to save money. The company is still there; it just wants a smaller, cheaper staff. People who lose their jobs in a downsizing are often laid off — they did not necessarily do anything wrong. News and business talk like this word because it sounds a little softer than “ a lot of people,” though actually that is often what happens. You will also hear families say they are downsizing when they move to a smaller home; that is a later, looser use. In work English, the core meaning is jobs.
