A downpour is a lot of rain that falls hard in a short time. The sky opens, the street turns to water, and you are soaked in a minute. It is stronger than a shower and shorter, usually, than a whole day of rain. People say “a downpour” or “caught in a downpour.” Weather reports may call the same thing heavy rain; downpour is the everyday picture-word. Though actually the verb you hear is not “to downpour” — people say it is pouring, or pouring down. The rain pours down, and the noun for that rush is a downpour.
