A doughnut is a small sweet fried cake. The shape people picture now is often a ring with a hole, but that ring became common only later; the first doughnuts were little round balls of fried dough, about as small as a nut, or like a small round cake. You can still buy the ball kind, and the holes cut from ring doughnuts are sold as doughnut holes. The cake is sweet, often covered in sugar, , or jam. In shops and signs, especially in American English, you will very often see the shorter spelling donut; it is the same food, not a different thing. The word is informal and everyday — snack talk, bakeries, breakfast. People sometimes stretch it for other ring shapes, but the home meaning is this fried cake.
