A doubloon is an old gold coin from Spain and from the Spanish lands in the Americas. People used it hundreds of years ago; you will not pay with one in a shop now. The name comes from the idea of “double”: it was worth twice another old gold coin, the pistole. In stories, films, and games about pirates and treasure, doubloons are the shiny coins in the chest. Historians and coin collectors still use the word in a careful way, for a real kind of coin. Everyday speakers mostly meet it in that pirate-treasure picture, and they may use it a little loosely for any old Spanish gold piece. It sounds old and a bit story-like, not like modern money words such as dollar.
