A man’s tight jacket, worn in Europe from about the 1400s to the middle 1600s. It sat close to the body, often or lined, and was worn over a shirt; sleeves could be separate and tied on. Think of a musketeer or a Tudor portrait — that short, fitted top is a doublet. It is a history-and-costume word now; nobody wears a doublet to the office. You will meet it in museums, Shakespeare, and films set in that time. This spelling has other lives in English (a pair of similar things; two words from one old root), but those are different entries. This one is only the jacket.

組成From Middle English doublet, borrowed from Old French doublet, from double / duble / doble + -et. Equivalent to double + -et (a small-thing ending): the jacket was lined, so the cloth came in two layers. A second attested line goes from Italian giubbetta, from giubba, from Arabic جبة (to en-wrap).
