A double-date is an outing for two couples at once: four people go to a film, a restaurant, a walk, and so on, together. It can take some pressure off, especially early on, because you are not sitting there as one quiet pair. People also use it as a verb: “We’re double-dating on Saturday.” Informal, everyday, about romance mixed with friendship. Though actually, it is not the same as seeing two people in secret (that is two-timing), and it is not a big mixer where singles hunt for a match. It is two already-paired couples sharing the same night out.
