To double-book is to promise the same seat, room, or time to more than one person — usually by mistake. A theatre, an airline, a hotel, or a busy clinic might do this when two people book the same slot, or when a computer list and a paper list get out of step. The second person to arrive is the one who finds out. You can also double-book yourself: you say yes to two meetings at the same hour. Though actually this is not the same as “”. Some companies on purpose: they sell more tickets than seats, betting that a few people will not come. Double-book is the accident of giving the same thing twice; can be the plan. The word belongs to everyday service talk — desks, phones, diaries — not to formal law language.
