    A doorpost is one of the two tall pieces of wood, metal, or stone that stand on the left and the right of a doorway. The door hangs from one of them. Together with the piece across the top, they hold the door in place. People also say doorjamb for almost the same thing. You might hear doorpost in older writing, in the Bible (blood on the doorposts), and in talk about buildings. Everyday speech often just says “the doorframe” or “the side of the door.” It is a quiet, practical word, not a fancy one.
