A doorjamb is the upright post at the side of a door — one of the two vertical pieces of the frame that the door sits in and closes against. It is not the whole frame, and it is not the strip on the floor. Builders use the word, and so do ordinary people when someone leans there, bangs a shoulder, or measures for a new door. You may also see it written as two words, door jamb; it is the same thing. Jamb by itself is the side post of a frame, so a window has jambs too. The word is everyday if you talk about houses, but it is not a child’s first door-word.
