A doorknocker is the heavy metal piece on the outside of a door that you lift and let fall so it hits the door and makes a loud bang. It is often a ring, a bar, or a little metal hand or animal head. A visitor uses it to say “I am here” when there is no bell, or when they like the old way better. You see them most on older houses and on fancy front doors. On many new buildings people just press a bell or call a phone, so a doorknocker can feel a bit old — though actually plenty of homes still have both. When we say doorknocker we mean that hitting-piece, not a person who knocks.
